Melfort - an area of outstanding natural beauty
Author Holiday West Highland
The village is located in a small valley at the head of Loch na Cille, which is a small bay at the head of Loch Melfort. The centre of the village consists of a cluster of 25 or so houses, a hotel, Post Office and General Store, and the Kirk (Church of Scotland), which is prominently situated on a small knoll. The Magic of Melfort lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is ideally situated for those who wish to explore the hills on foot, or the surrounding coast and islands by boat.
There are many miles of excellent walks, some of which allow wild life spotting; from the brown eagle to the grey heron, gold finches, robins and deer, with stunning views over the surrounding countryside and coast. Kilmelford has wild brown trout fishing on the many hill lochs around the area. Also excellent is the sea fishing, offering a wide variety of species.
If you come by boat, or come to charter a boat, there are moorings available at Kilmelford Yacht Haven, and at Fearnach Bay at the head of Loch Melfort. This is a good starting point for visiting the islands of the Inner Hebrides, the main ones nearby being Islay, Jura, Scarba, and the Garvellachs. There are many sheltered anchorages to be found up and down the coast within a days sail of Loch Melfort. Cuilfail Hotel is a rare Scottish gem, a charming, authentically traditional and rustic West Highland village inn -style small, family run hotel. Part of the hotel was originally an old drovers inn, however the majority of the hotel was built during the Victorian era.
The name Cuilfail (pronounced cool-fail) in Gaelic appropriately means Sheltered Corner. The atmosphere is one of total peace and tranquillity. The Melfort area is very pet friendly with many of the accommodation available making your pets welcome. At Appaloosa stables, horse activities on off er include group, private or lunge lessons: Natural ground training; Schooling on the all-weather arena round pen with gymnastic jumping lane or over outlying cross-country jumps; Peaceful hacks or day-rides with cameras and picnic bags. Riding Out may include a visit to local shrub gardens, to village inns, rounding up hill cattle or simply splashing along the seashore. The stables are open all year.
Why not take one of the daily wildlife trips to Corryvreckan whirlpools with Farsain Cruises. Arduaine Garden is a place of peace on a wild shore, a plantsmans paradise. Whatever you choose to do, you are sure to enjoy the Magic of Melfort after you have been walking the hills, or are working to get your boat ready for the summer, maybe you have been horse riding
